Photograph: AlamyThe U. S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. They are used to treat erectile dysfunction in men.
The drug class, which includes Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, also includes Cialis and Stendra. However, unlike Viagra and Cialis, the class includes only nitrates. This means that a person with angina (low blood pressure) may not feel faint when urinating.
The FDA approved the drugs as a treatment for angina. The drug was developed by Cialis’s manufacturer, Lilly.
Viagra, Cialis and Stendra are all PDE5 inhibitors. PDE5 is an enzyme found in the smooth muscle in the penis, helping the body produce more blood. It regulates blood flow.
They work by relaxing the muscles around the blood vessels in the penis, allowing blood to flow more easily.
They are also used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. Viagra and Cialis are also used to treat pulmonary hypertension. Both medications have similar mechanisms of action, including inhibiting the enzyme PDE5. In addition, both of these medications have similar side effects.
Viagra and Cialis are not a Class 2 drug, as they do not produce an erection or erect the penis when used as directed.
Both Viagra and Cialis can cause side effects. Side effects are generally similar for both drugs. Some of the side effects include:
Side effects of Viagra and Cialis may include:
Viagra and Cialis inhibit the enzyme PDE5. These PDE5 enzymes help the body use more blood to pump around the penis. Cialis works by relaxing the muscles of the penis, thereby improving blood flow.
Viagra and Cialis are available as two different medicines. The active ingredient, sildenafil citrate, is in both Viagra and Cialis. Sildenafil is in a class of drugs known as phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. They are used to treat erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men.
Both Viagra and Cialis do not produce an erection when taken as directed. They can cause side effects including:
Viagra and Cialis are available as tablets. The recommended dose is one tablet taken about 30 minutes before sexual activity. Cialis is a more potent PDE5 inhibitor than Viagra.
If a person is not sure if they need an erectile dysfunction treatment, they should seek medical advice from their doctor. The most common side effects include:
Men who have not yet reached the age of 50 should not take Viagra or Cialis. People who are allergic to sildenafil or any other ingredient in Viagra or Cialis may be at an increased risk for erectile dysfunction.
People with heart problems, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a personal or family history of erectile dysfunction should not take Viagra or Cialis.
There are many other alternatives to Viagra and Cialis.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to purchase or use Cenforce, a product promoted and sold for sexual enhancement on various websites, in an effort to evade FDA’s warnings.
FDA laboratory analysis found that Cenforce contains sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, used to treat erectile dysfunction. FDA warns consumers not to purchase or use Cenforce, because the medication is dangerous for them and poses significant health risks.
“Cenforce is a dangerous medication for consumers that should not be used in place of prescription drugs or over the counter medicines,” said Janet Woodcock, M. D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “These dangerous ingredients have led to increased demand for Cenforce, especially in an effort to avoid dangerously low prices for those suffering from erectile dysfunction.”
Cenforce is available only with a doctor’s prescription, and consumers are advised not to purchase or use Cenforce, as it is not approved for use by the FDA.
In May 2021, the FDA issued a warning about the risk of sexual dysfunction associated with Cenforce use. The agency also directed that consumers do not purchase or use Cenforce, unless directed by a doctor to do so by the FDA’s Office of Generic Drug Safety.
